Opioids were initially used as a cough medication. But, this often resulted in long-term effects including usage and addiction as the major ones. This failure by the medical community to properly manage the pain leads to an epidemic of prescription-painkiller abuse that has badly affected the lives of so many people. In the U.S., over 1000 people are treated in emergencies per day for prescription opioid misuse.
