Amharic also known as Ethiopian, Amhara, Amarinya, Amarigna, or Abyssinian, belongs to the Semitic branch of the Afro-Asiatic language family. Amharic with 4 million second language speakers and 22 million first speakers, it is the official working language of Ethiopia, along with Tigrinya and English.
It is generally used in education, national commerce, public media, and government fields. Amharic has a variety of local dialects, all of which are mutually intelligible.
There are three major dialects: Showa, Gojjami, and Gondar. There are specially marked differences in grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation between the southern Showa and the northern Gojjami dialects.
