A variety of insects and pathogens can infect plants at different stages of crop growth. Environmental stresses like extreme temperatures and lack of moisture or nutrients impair crop development. Before the advent of modern chemicals, crop losses due to these factors averaged around 30-40%. This posed a serious threat to global food supply.
