Women who are or have been in relationships with their abusers, as well as women who have shared a home, are protected by the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, and are connected to them by consanguinity, marriage, or other romantic or familial relationships, such as adoption. The Domestic Violence Act also extends protection to women who are sisters, widows, mothers, single women, or involved in any other type of contact with the abuser.
