At the core of this still-evolving discipline is the application of classical and novel techniques developed in cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, proteomics and genetics, to the evaluation of pathological processes. In drug discovery and preclinical safety assessment, morphological changes in cells are often accompanied by changes in DNA, RNA, or protein molecules. Further understanding of these molecular changes can help to understand target distribution, pharmacodynamics, and to elucidate pharmacological and/or toxicological mechanisms. In addition, there is an increasing demand for information on tumor sub-classification, prognosis, therapeutic response, and molecular therapeutic targets. These demands are increasingly covered by molecular pathology and require an extended spectrum of methods.
