It is a place that has played host to some of the most important events in Scottish History. A monk at Patras named Regulus (or Rule) was told in a dream to hide some of the Apostle’s bones. He took an arm, a kneecap and three fingers and sailed until he was shipwrecked in Fife. Golfers come to St Andrews in droves for several courses ranked among the best in the world, but the Old Course is what the town is really known for. The course has been around for nearly 300 years and has become the standard for the game of golf. It’s the first place to have 18 holes and was the inspiration for many other modern courses. When William St Clair of Roslin, the captain of The Royal and Ancient, changed the layout in 1764, he made it an 18-hole course. This is how the modern game of golf was developed.
